Faking It

Just across the entrance to Belle Isle, a pleasant breeze blows through the old
car-charging station that houses Prop Art Studio, cooling an employee whos busily making cupcakes. But the wafts dont carry the expected sweet aroma of cake batter. Instead, the place just smells like Styrofoam.
Thats because Prop Art Studio doesnt make cupcakes at least not the confections that you guiltily devour with a cold glass of milk. In fact, they dont really make anything that is what it appears. That Ford Edge that was perched atop all those billboards last year well, it wasnt a real vehicle. It was a lightweight, full-size Styrofoam model made by Prop Art.

When Lay's decided to emphasize the natural ingredients in their products, the famous chip maker decided to truly go au natural. They wanted a carved board. The wanted real wood. They wanted to recycle all the wood chips. And they hired Prop Art Studio for the unusual job.
Four metro Detroit artist used chisels, mallets and a little sandpaper, and they carved the billboard on basswood panels over 10 days. Two artists worked 2-hour shifts because of the difficulty of the work. Their old-school approach became the talk of the neighborhood around Mission and Van Ness, with passer-by following the progress with great interest.
The Prop Art crew helped make the billboard one of the
most-viewd ads in San Francisco.
The McDonald's egg is 21 feet by 14 feet and sits next to Wrigley Field.
The shell cracks open slowly every morning. Inside is a yolk with a message: "Fresh Eggs Daily."
The Leo Burnett USA ad agency hatched the idea for the egg. Prop Art Studio and Metro Media Technologies (mmt) did the rest.
