About This Project

When Lay’s decided to emphasize the natural ingredients in their products, the famous chip maker decided to truly go au natural. They wanted a carved board. The wanted real wood. They wanted to recycle all the wood chips. And they hired Prop Art Studio for the unusual job.

Four metro Detroit artist used chisels, mallets and a little sandpaper, and they carved the billboard on basswood panels over 10 days. Two artists worked 2-hour shifts because of the difficulty of the work. Their old-school approach became the talk of the neighborhood around Mission and Van Ness, with passer-by following the progress with great interest.

The Prop Art crew helped make the billboard one of the most-viewed ads in San Francisco.
